What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to equipment, devices, and products that help individuals perform tasks more safely, independently, and efficiently.
Assistive Technology may support:
- Mobility and community access
- Bathroom and toileting activities
- Daily living tasks
- Pressure care and positioning
- Transfers and safety
- Functional independence at home and in the community
Understanding NDIS Assistive Technology Funding
The NDIS generally categorises Assistive Technology into
three funding levels based on the complexity, risk, and cost of the equipment.
Low Cost Assistive Technology
Typically valued at less than $1,500 per item.
These items are generally lower risk and may often be
purchased directly if they meet the participant's disability-related needs and
are considered reasonable and necessary.
Mid Cost Assistive Technology
Typically valued between $1,500 and $15,000 per item.
These items may require supporting information or
professional recommendations depending on the participant's circumstances and
the complexity of the equipment.
High Cost Assistive Technology
Typically valued at more than $15,000 per item.
These items are generally more complex and usually
require a comprehensive assessment and supporting documentation from an
appropriately qualified professional before funding approval can be considered.
Funding requirements may vary depending on the participant's plan, goals, circumstances, and the type of equipment being requested.
